Microdermabrasion

  • Overview
    What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive procedure involving the use of microcrystals to remove the outer layers of dry or dead skin cells, in order to reveal younger, healthier looking skin. Microdermabrasion encourages the production of new skin cells with higher levels of collagen and elastin, which tightens your skin and further improves its appearance. Unlike dermabrasion – a more intensive procedure used to treat deep lines and scars – microdermabrasion is quite gentle and can be done within an hour.

After years of prolonged exposure to the sun’s rays, pollution and other damaging agents in the environment, your skin will not look as good as it formerly did. However, microdermabrasion treatments can successfully reduce or eliminate wrinkles and fine lines, crow’s feet, age spots, acne scars and unappealing pigmentation that appear on the skin over time.

Patients with fine facial lines or wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, uneven pigmentation, clogged pores, skin texture problems, or minor scars are perfect candidates for microdermabrasion. The gentle spray of microcrystals can eliminate or improve skin imperfections and conditions by removing the upper layer of dead and damaged skin cells to reveal new, fresh skin.

What you should know before undergoing microdermabrasion treatment

During treatment, a stream of tiny ("micro") aluminum oxide crystals is directed through a hand piece that is placed against the skin. These dermabrasion crystals exfoliate the skin, and the mild suction created by the microdermabrasion system removes the skin debris.

As with other skin rejuvenation techniques, more than one treatment may be needed to reduce or remove fine wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation.

  • Risks and Safety
Important facts about the safety and risks of microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a safe, non-surgical procedure that provides many benefits, with virtually no side effects. Because microdermabrasion uses non-allergenic crystals to treat the skin, it is an excellent treatment for skin that is sensitive to chemicals. Microdermabrasion does not present any serious risks when it is performed by a qualified provider.

It’s very important to ask your plastic surgeon questions about your procedure. It’s natural to feel some anxiety, whether it’s excitement for your anticipated new look or a bit of preoperative stress. Don’t be shy about discussing these feelings with your surgeon.
